Iโ€™ve faced this head-on. In the early days, culture felt effortless. Youโ€™re all at one table, every voice is heard, and decisions happen naturally. But as the team grows, you quickly realise the things that worked at the start donโ€™t scale. Thatโ€™s when I learned a vital truth: ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ฒ ๐˜€๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฎ๐—ฏ๐—น๐˜† ๐˜†๐—ผ๐˜‚ ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐—ถ๐—น๐—ฑ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐—น๐˜๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฎ๐˜'๐˜€ ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ถ๐—ป๐˜๐—ผ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐—ฟ ๐—ผ๐—ณ ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€ - ๐—ป๐—ผ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ๐—ป ๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜๐—ต๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ด๐—ต๐˜, ๐—ฏ๐˜‚๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐˜€ ๐—ฎ ๐—ณ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐—ป๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ผ๐—ป..



Here are two lessons that stayed with me:



โœ… ๐—–๐—ผ-๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜ƒ๐—ฎ๐—น๐˜‚๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐˜„๐—ถ๐˜๐—ต ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ณ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฑ ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜†๐˜๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด.


We didnโ€™t just define values in a leadership meeting and announce them - we built them together. Every voice contributed, and that sense of ownership made the values real.ย 



We celebrated behaviours that brought our values to life, shouting out examples during team meetings, on Slack, and giving the team space to do the same. The most powerful moment was when the team truly owned it. Values werenโ€™t words on a wall - they were alive in every decision, project & interaction.



Thatโ€™s when I knew our culture was thriving.



โœ… ๐—˜๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—ผ๐˜„๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ต๐—ฒ ๐˜๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—บ ๐—ฐ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐˜๐—ฟ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ณ๐—ฒ๐˜๐˜† ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ธ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜.


I once worked with a leadership team struggling to solve a persistent problem. I asked a simple question: โ€œ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฎ ๐˜ด๐˜ข๐˜บ?โ€



The room went silent. Then someone replied, โ€œ๐˜•๐˜ฐ ๐˜ช๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข. ๐˜ž๐˜ฉ๐˜บ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฐ๐˜ถ๐˜ญ๐˜ฅ ๐˜ธ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ฌ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ? ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜บโ€™๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ๐˜ต ๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ฅ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ.โ€



But hereโ€™s the thing - I had asked the team. Their ideas were practical, thoughtful, and far ahead of where we were as leaders. It was a reminder that the people closest to the day-to-day often have the best solutions.



As leaders, our role isnโ€™t to solve every problem. Itโ€™s to create the space for others to shine, clear blockers, and trust the team to do their jobs. When we do, we unlock their creativity and speed and give them the confidence to grow.

Building a culture isnโ€™t easy, but itโ€™s worth it. Co-create values, celebrate them, and trust your team to lead. Thatโ€™s where magic happens.
